Wedding Playlist: Top 50 First Dance Songs
By Luke Ellery

Picking afirst dance song can be a laborious task, especially if you don'thave "a song" that you and your partner associatewithyour relationship. There is a lot to consider when picking a first dance song, do you go modern or classic? Do you go for anupbeat dance number, or slow and romantic? You also need to think about the lyrics of the song, are the really suitable? (some love songs can be very misleading, and actually, have some negative connotations). But hey, no need to worry about that. We have spent hours slaving through the most followed playlists on Spotify in order to put together a list of 50 (and still growing) love songs that would make great first dance tracks. The playlist has a mix of old and new, and fast and slow - you'll be spoilt for choice. Below are 5 of our favourites from the list to give you a taste and the full playlist is attached at the end for your listening pleasure.

1/ Like I'm Gonna Lose You

This beautiful duet from Meghan Trainor and John Legend (two silky-voiced stars) is a great choice for your first dance. It has a nice clear beat which makes dancing a little easier, but it is still slow enough for a traditional couple's dance. Having been released in 2015, It is a fairly modern song, so it isn't "over-done" yet. The song is about knowing you might not have forever so you should make the most of every second you share with your love.

Favourite Lyrical Moment:

I woke up in tears
With you by my side
A breath of relief

2/ Halo

Queen B created a timeless classic with Halo. Like the previous song on this list, the song has a strong beat which is great for those who might struggle with dancing, but it still maintains that classic slow romantic feeling. The song is a powerful love ballad that equates the feeling of love with the feeling of faith and religion.

Favourite Lyrical Moment:

I found a way to let you win
But I never really had a doubt
Standing in the light of your halo
I got my angel now

3/ Can't Help Falling In Love With You

Originally recorded by Elvis Presley in 1961, the song has seen many covers and reimaginings. The version we have put on our playlist is by Ingrid Michaelson. Don't get us wrong; we love Elvis' original, however, Ingrid brings a modern and emotional quality to the song. It is a much slower song than the previous two songs on this list, and the beat it not quite as strong. With that in mind, make sure you have at least a basic idea of what you're going to do for your first dance i.e some very simple choreography.

Favourite Lyrical Moment:

So take my hand, and take my whole life too
Cause I can't help falling in love with you

4/ You're In Love

Taylor Swift released this song as a bonus track on her award-winning album, 1989. It was written as a commentary on the relationship of her friends Lena Dunham and Jack Antinoff. Lena Dunham has since announced that it will definitely be her wedding song. The reason we love this song so much is that there is no attempt to try and explain love with a grand metaphor, the lyrics are simple but meaningful and ultimately relatable. The strong beat makes it easy to dance to, and the ethereal sound is bound to get a few happy tears out of your guests.

Favourite Lyrical Moment:

You kissed on sidewalks
You fight and you talk
One night he wakes, strange look on his face

Pauses, then says, you're my best friend
And you knew what it was, he is in love

5/ The Cure

It may not seem like the most obvious choice for a first dance song; it is not one of the common choices. However, for all intents and purposes, it is an ideal song, the lyrics in this song represent a true declaration of love and the beat is strong. This song is medium to fast-paced, so if you and your partner are interested in choreographing something a little less traditional, then this song could be the one for you.

Favourite Lyrical Moment:

May not have the fancy things
But I'll give you everything
You could ever want, it's in my arms
