7 International Bridal Makeup Looks
28 September 2018
It can be difficult to choose a makeup look for your wedding day. On one hand, the ideal look is something special compared to your everyday look. But on the other hand, you don’t want a look that transforms your face into something so far removed from your actual self. The options can be infinite if you make things too complicated with all the combinations of brow, eye, lip, and face makeup techniques. To help you find inspiration for your perfect look in the simplest of ways, we've taken a look at bridal makeup styles from around the world to find seven of the most exceptional looks that bring out the best of the brides’ beauty in different ways. 1/ SOUTH KOREA - MINIMALIST BEAUTY

The principles of Korean beauty practices have been permeating the mediasphere for the last few years, and it seems unlikely that people will be losing interest any time soon. The popular Korean bridal look is all about the kind of beauty that emphasises youthfulness. Minimalist, barely-there makeup (highlighting products and light liquid foundations) that leaves the complexion looking bright is popular with Korean brides who will have invested a lot of time on skincare before the wedding day so that subtlety is all they need. This sort of look pairs particularly well with classic, white wedding gowns, bringing demure undertones to balance out the pomp and circumstance of the overall look. Pastel colours for the cheeks, lips, and eyes are common in Korean makeup looks, and brides longing for a more sensual aesthetic can opt for a lighter brown eyeshadow or the wisp of a smokey eye.
2/ SPAIN - striking BEAUTY

Spanish brides often use makeup to highlight the striking architecture of their faces. Brows - the pièce de résistance of the Spanish bridal makeup look - tend to be well-shaped and filled in for a distinct, confident demeanour. Bronzers and blushes are used to bring out the best of the wearers’ stunning skin tones, for a sun-kissed appearance. As for lip colour, you can take your pick - darker shades, brighter hues, or even plummy tones all complement this style beautifully.
3/ INDIA - extravagant BEAUTY

There is an incredible diversity to the bridal attire of Indian brides - the rituals and customs vary considerably depending on the many regions and cultures of India. What they all have in common is that the bridal attire is larger than life; bold colours, embroidery, extravagant jewellery, and other adornments are a necessary part of the extensive celebrations of an Indian wedding. This means that Indian bridal makeup is often just as bold so that the bride’s features are not obscured by the business of the bridalwear. For brides-to-be who have chosen an alternative wedding dress colour, or just want their look to communicate joy loudly, a similarly vibrant makeup look will immediately create an atmosphere of exuberance.
4/ FRANCE - timeless BEAUTY

The beauty and fashion routines of French women have been propagated and imitated by the masses for decades. The epitome of chic, the French makeup look is perfect for a bride - who wouldn’t want to exude confidence, sensuality, and style on their wedding day? This makeup look is discreet, never upstaging the natural beauty of the wearer, so try to accentuate the single, best feature of your face. If your best asset are your eyes, go all out with the eyeshadow but avoid a bold lip. The key is to create a makeup style that draws attention to the wearer’s carefree, natural beauty. Which is why this look is often paired with messy hair, making it the perfect choice for down-to-earth or bohemian brides who want their look to seem laissez-faire but refined.
5/ GREECE - divine BEAUTY

The Greek bridal look is a little more difficult to emulate, largely because a huge component of it can’t be attained in a makeup store. A lifestyle of healthy eating (the Mediterranean diet is known to be among the healthiest in the world) and regular beauty practices that focus on improving the health of the skin using natural ingredients mean that Greek women really do have the classic beauty for which they are renowned. The bridal makeup is therefore only the final step for a wedding look and is relatively nuanced - well-groomed brows, a bit of (non-red) colour on the lips, and a hint of colourful shadow around well-lined eyes.
6/ MEXICO - fierce BEAUTY

Mexican women veer towards a more dramatic style of makeup in general, favouring sensually defined eyes, tanned skin with bronzer on top, and typically a signature red lipstick. A less brightly coloured lipstick can be a pretty alternative for a more bohemian feel at a wedding, but in general, the Mexican bridal makeup style is similar to that of everyday wear. It’s a look that heightens the warmth of the skin tones (note the shimmery gold eyeshadow of the bride in the image above) and complements the bold colour palette of the rest of the wedding decor (and venue!). So if you’re planning a wedding in the sun or one with lots of colour, do as the Mexicans do and opt for a similarly radiant makeup style.
7/ SWEDEN - radiant BEAUTY

Swedish brides often opt for a bridal look that reflects the simplicity and reserved elegance of their everyday lives. Perhaps influenced by Swedish culture’s commitment to holistic health and the people’s deep connection to the outdoors, this look radiates a very natural kind of wellbeing. A high-quality foundation, highlighting products that emphasise the radiance of the complexion, and a lipstick in a very neutral colour are all you need for this less-is-more aesthetic.
