12 Tips for a Stress Free Wedding Morning

With all the love and effort you’ll have poured into your wedding day in the lead-up, the day itself is definitely a time for relaxing! We’ve gathered some top tips for starting the day right, from preparations you can make in advance to making the most of the morning itself.

1/ Choose a space you love for getting ready

The space you choose to spend your time getting ready can impact the whole experience. Important factors include are your own comfort (sometimes home is best!), proximity to the venue and to the groom (to save the photographer travelling too far for those ‘getting ready’ photos), the amount of space and light (preferably as much natural light as possible for photography). 

2/ Plan trial runs

Whether you’re having your makeup and hair done by professionals or going DIY, have trial runs for both well in advance to ensure you get the look perfect on the day. Don’t be afraid to take photos to allow you to evaluate your look from different angles or in different light. It’s far better to make any adjustments in advance than under pressure on the day itself.

3/ Have a schedule and leave plenty of time

Often getting ready takes a lot longer than you might think! Possibly the single most important ingredient in a stress-free morning is having plenty of time so you don’t need to watch the clock. Consult with any professionals involved when scheduling and leave plenty of contingency time in case something overruns.

4/ Organise items and clothing in advance

You’ll want to be able to easily lay your hand on anything you might need come your wedding morning, so be sure to have them in their places early on. This includes your own outfits and accessories, but also any extras that the photographer might want to capture (rings, an invitation suite, perfume, shoes, bouquet, family heirlooms).

You may want to think about how you’ll store and present certain items – the dress in particular. Remove the garment bag a little in advance to let the material breathe and loosen any wrinkles and think about buying an especially elegant or personalised hanger for the dress to add a touch of luxury. All tags and stickers should also be removed ahead of time. It’s a small task but one less thing to worry about on the morning itself!

5/ Plan your morning outfit

For practical reasons, plan to wear something that won’t ruin your makeup or hairstyle when it’s time to change into the wedding dress (either a button-down or a zip-up top would work great). If your dress is strapless, don’t forget to wear a strapless bra to avoid the stress of unsightly strap marks!

6/ Bring the fun!

Champagne or mimosas are a lovely treat to make the pampering feel that bit more luxurious and take your mind off any jitters. Prepare a playlist full of music you love to keep things upbeat and fun!

7/ The night before

A simple ingredient for a less stressful wedding morning is getting enough sleep! No need to go to bed too early but aim to stick to your regular sleeping pattern in order to feel bright-eyed and refreshed upon waking.

To ensure you sleep soundly, it’s wise not to drink too much alcohol or caffeine the day before. (This is a good reason to plan the bachelorette party for several days to a week ahead of the wedding instead of the evening before!) Instead, drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and treat your body and mind by indulging in a pamper session or some light yoga.

8/ Have a filling breakfast

Weddings can be exhausting! You don’t need the added worry of feeling weak or faint later in the day. Even if nerves affect your appetite, be sure to fuel up with a healthy, protein-rich breakfast to keep energised. If your ceremony isn’t until mid-afternoon, you’ll want to also make plans for lunch. Ordering food in is quick and easy – perfect for minimising stress!

9/ Surround yourself with loved ones

Spend breakfast and the time before getting ready with your closest friends and family. Dedicating some quality time to being with loved ones before things get busy is always time well spent, while also helping to keep you grounded and at ease.

10/ Keep things tidy

Ensure your getting-ready space is kept tidy and clutter free, for your own comfort and for beautiful, clean photographs. This may mean delegating tidying tasks to a bridesmaid, or simply having a designated out-of-sight area for everyone to leave their belongings. 

11/ Have your makeup and hair done early

While some suggest that the bride should go last, this means that if hair and makeup preparations are running late the rest of the wedding schedule will be affected. It can also lead to rushing, which is the last thing you want for a stress-free morning! Finish your own preparations early, on the other hand, and you can begin getting dressed and ready to go even if there are other delays.

Even with the most organised plan, things may feel like a whirlwind. Ensure you take the time to slow down, breathe and appreciate the magical moments unique to your wedding morning. From the flutter of excitement you’re sure to feel when you first wake up to the laughter you’ll share with your best friends or your family’s expressions when they see you in your dress. It’s going to be wonderful!
