How to Find the Right Dress for Your Body Shape

By Sally Eagle Bridal Design and

Let’s be honest – it’s hard to find the perfect wedding dress. You might love that sleek silk design, but it just doesn’t flatter you! And you’d sworn to yourself that you wouldn’t wear a tulle, bridal ballgown, but it actually looks pretty good on your figure. Sometimes, the dress you think you want isn’t the best dress for you. Sally, from Sally Eagle Bridal, has shared some helpful tips on how to find a dress to suit your body type. Listen to your dress designer, be honest with yourself, and follow these tips.

Stick to What Suits

The best piece of advice Sally has to offer is to choose a dress that expresses who you are. It’s best not to get too caught up in the current craze; instead, stick to what you really like (and what really suits you). Fashions and trends come and go, but your wedding photos will be with you forever. I think the best compliment you can get is that your dress is 'so you'.

Don’t let others' opinions sway you. In the end, it’s your dress, you are the one wearing it and you know what feels comfortable. When trying on dresses, bring people who will be supportive of you and whose opinions you trust – but don't bring too many or it may get overwhelming for you!

Be Open-Minded

It is also a good idea to pick a dress style that suits your body type. Unfortunately, the wedding dresses we see in magazines are mostly worn by size 6 models, which is not necessarily a realistic representation of how it will look on every bride. Therefore, it’s a really good idea to try on several different styles and then make up your mind about which style you will focus on, rather than making selections based on images alone. When getting a feel for styles, try on a few weddings dresses that you might not have thought would naturally work for you – they could just surprise you and look amazing!

Follow these tips to find a dress that will suit your body type:

  • If you have a sizeable bust, a low scoop or v-neck works well; it’s best not to opt for a high neckline as it will make your bust look larger.
  • If you have a smaller bust, a high neckline will look great.
  • If you want to show off your curves, a fitted mermaid-style dress will really accentuate the body and look stunning.
  • If you want to highlight your slim waist, a fitted bodice with a full skirt will help make the waist look small.
  • If you feel conscious about your tummy, a full skirt with gathers or pleats at the waist will cover the tummy well (and means you can feel good about eating all the amazing food you chose for the wedding!).
  • If you are on the short side, it’s best to choose a dress where the skirt starts from the waist or higher. A dress with a dropped waist (ie. a seam that sits across the hips) can make you look shorter.
