10 Ways to Make Your Wedding Invitations Unique

By Lorna Urwin

Wedding stationery is often personal, with the aesthetic and wording giving a preview into the style and tone of the wedding itself. Traditional choices between different papers, colours and imagery can all make a difference, but there are plenty of more unusual twists on the classics that will truly set your invitations apart from the crowd! Read on for some creative ways to make your wedding invitations unique.

Elevate your invitations or envelopes to works of art by adorning them with painted or digital illustrations unique to you as a couple. A simple yet sweet portrait of the two of you is a popular choice, but you could also use an image or map of the wedding venue, a beloved pet or any other symbol of your forthcoming nuptials.

Typically this would be a professional commission, but if you or someone you know has some serious artistic skills you may be able to DIY to create a similar effect!

Personalised postage stamps

When it comes to envelope design, stamps tend to be more of a practicality than central to the overall look. But since your wedding invitations are perhaps the most beautiful pieces of stationery you will ever put in the post, you might as well send them off with appropriately beautiful postage! With the availability of personalised stamps for post sent within New Zealand, this process is actually very straightforward. Simply select an image that you’d like to use, visit the NZ Post website, upload the image, choose the stamp denomination and number of sheets you’d like and place your order!

Create a sense of heritage

Weddings are steeped in tradition and formality. If that’s something that appeals to you, this is the perfect time to embrace the styles of times gone by!

Monograms serve this purpose well and the design can be as simple or elaborate as you prefer. Not only do monograms add a touch of sophistication, blending your initials together creates a powerful symbol for your love that you can reuse in the future! For something with more unusual charm, a playful coat of arms is a sweet alternative. Or borrow from the age of handwritten correspondence and use a gorgeous wax seal with a personalised stamp.

Creative paper

There are many ways to transform ordinary paper into something extraordinary:

1/ Shape

Variations on shape create an unusual invitation from the moment the envelope is opened. Circular or oval designs can be particularly striking and unexpected, but there are plenty of other geometric alternatives for invites or inserts.

2/ Paper cut

These usually take the form of elaborate patterns or imagery cut out of paper and used as an overlay, enclosure or border to the main invite.

3/ Origami

The Japanese art of origami can lend a delicate, creative twist to your stationery. Use Pinterest or Google to explore the array of creative choices available, from simple abstract folding designs to more elaborate hearts or flowers.

Recreate something fun

Certain pieces of stationery are especially evocative, calling to mind feelings of nostalgia or excitement. If these emotions are things you’d like your guests to feel upon receiving your invitation, consider dressing the invite up as something else:

4/ Postcard/passport/boarding Pass

Each of these items instantly calls to mind the exoticism of far-flung locations. These are a natural fit for a destination wedding, but can easily be used locally too, whether you both share a love of globetrotting or are having a travel-themed bash!

5/ Scratch card

mimic the mystery and suspense of scratch cards by concealing some of your wedding details behind those familiar silver windows. This works particularly well as a save the date reveal, but can definitely be incorporated into invitations too. Perhaps surprisingly, this is actually something you can DIY using a mixture of acrylic paint and washing up liquid!

6/ Book cover/first page/library card

Love books? Then honour your passion with a literature-inspired invitation. Whether it’s a decorative, Victorian style or a mid-century Penguin, beautiful book covers can make equally beautiful designs for invites. Alternatively, treat your wedding invite as the ‘first page’ in the story of your marriage and begin with ‘Once upon a time’, or use a mock up of an old-fashioned, stamped library card.

7/ Chocolate wrapper/golden ticket

If melting isn’t an issue, send your guests a bar of chocolate complete with a personalised, invite-wrapper for a whimsical and delicious introduction to what your wedding has in store! Or channel Mr. Wonka himself and slip a golden ticket-invitation inside into the wrapper of your personalised treat.
